Every addiction starts with pain and ends with pain. Whatever the substance you are addicted to ― alcohol, food, legal or illegal drugs, or a person ― you are using something or somebody to cover up your pain

And I agree with what you said: we're often feeding our pain.
I recently read "you can have the life you want, or the reasons why you can't". Well, I was thinking this morning that the same applies for our anger: we can learn from our anger and eventually dissolve it, or we can have the reasons why we are entitled to our rage (and to keep it). Often we choose the later.
(same with sadness or fear)
Or we may choose to deny it (which, I think, is worse), but that's another story
